Throwback Thursdays: Variety Shows

I miss the varity shows that were so popular when I was growing up. The Carol Burnett show always made me laugh. Loved Carol, Vicki Lawrence, Tim Conway, Harvey Korman and Lyle Waggoner. The show started in 1967 and lasted for 12 seasons. The skits with Mr. Tudball and Mrs. Wiggins (Tim and Carol) made me laugh out loud!

Sonny and Cher also had a fun variety show, with regular skits. I loved the outrageous costumes that Cher would wear.

I'm not sure variety shows will ever make a comeback. Folks seem to prefer reality television now. I think I might ask Santa for some Carol Burnett show DVDs. That cast can still make me laugh!

If you have the time, sit back and relax while Carol and Cher sing for you in their lovely Bob Mackie gowns!

Donna, I just loved those variety shows and Carol Burnett was tops!!!  I also liked Jonathon Winters and Dean Martin's variety shows as well.

You are not alone I think we all miss those shows we grew up with and the memories. Have a great day.

Hi Donna, I loved the old variety shows and Carol Burnett was a favorite.

I liked both shows, but I don't remember them ever singing together...FUNNY!

Bruce~ There were quite a few good ones. I liked Laugh-In too. Shows like Fantasy Island and Love Boat put an end to the variety shows.

Pat~ Television was very different then.

Sybil~ Tim Conway is just a hoot!

Larry and Sheila~ I don't remember it either. Looks like it was on Carol's show.

I really miss those, too.  I used to watch both of them.  When I was a kid I used to dress up like Cher.  At least that's what my parents tell me.

Hi Donna - That was a great time for variety/comedy shows. I watched those two, along with the Smothers Brothers and my all-time favorite - the very short-lived (4 episodes) Richard Pryor Show.

Debbie~ Geez, that photo would make a great Throwback Thursday!

Dick~ I liked the Smothers Brothers too.

Yeah I unfortunately am old enough to remember these, fondly of course, but yeah a time when life and values were completely different than today

Donna, You speak of simpler days gone by. Technology has advanced us too far ... too fast.  We did not have thousands of tv channels.  I liked Leave it to Beaver.

Don't forget Donnie & Marie and Barbara Mandrell.  Their shows were great too.

Those were some amazing shows, used to get lots of laughs, kind of miss some of them. Thanks for sharing the memories.

I was never one to watch variety shows, as I much prefer watching sports, but I know my Mom used to watch a lot of those.

Donna - yes I also enjoyed Carol Burnett and Sony and Cher.  Tastes change with time and someone who works in that industry said reality shows are desirable because they are the least expensive to produce.  It is also about money.

Hi Donna, we had one television when I grew up and we watched whatever our parents picked. The Smothers Brothers, Carol Burnett, Sonny & Cher..yes those were the good old days :-) Now we have 590 channels, and nothing much to watch.

Every generation has their own thing.  Ours just happens to be reality and some of them are really stretching that term.

Hi Donna,

I loved the old televison shows and the musicals were always so entertaining. I loved Ed Sullivan, Carol Burnett, Tom Jones, Dean Martin, Sonny and Cher, and so many others. TV is just not the same anymore.

I always loved both shows, and had some great laughs  with Carol Burnett and Cher.

The Carol Burnett was so funny when the people playing the parts were trying to hold back a giggle or laugh.

Posted by JoAnn Moore, Home Loans in Delaware (The Mortgage Market of Delaware) almost 5 years ago

Kathleen~ Never really watched Leave it to Beaver. I've always enjoyed cop shows...Columbo, Charlie's Angels, Police Woman, Kojak.

O M G, Chris Ann! How can I forget Donny & Marie!

Brian~ I didn't start watching sports until I was an adult.

Grant~ That's true and sad!

Posted by Donna Foerster, Metro Denver Real Estate Assistant (HomeSmart Realty Group) almost 5 years ago

Istn't that the case, Mary. Nothing worth watching, anyway!

Kevin~ The only reality shows I really like are the cooking shows. Otherwise they are more like soap operas than anything else. Too much overacted drama!

Alan~ Tim Conway and Harvey Korman are a hoot together!

Lou~ It's a classic!

Posted by Donna Foerster, Metro Denver Real Estate Assistant (HomeSmart Realty Group) almost 5 years ago

Kristin~ It's not the same.  The closest thing we have is Dancing with the Stars, American Idol and The Voice.

Rebecca~ It's nearly impossible not to laugh at Carol and friends!

JoAnn~ And it happened all the time!

Posted by Donna Foerster, Metro Denver Real Estate Assistant (HomeSmart Realty Group) almost 5 years ago

Yes Donna, these shows were very popular back then, I think they may have been replaced by MTV.
