Movie Monday: Why Do We Go To The Movies?
Lately we've been renting movies and enjoying them in the comfort of our own home. (Usually in pjs on the loveseat!) I do however enjoy going to the theater for those larger than life movies with lots of action and special effects. (I would like to see Iron Man 3 and the new Star Trek movie at the theater.)
My favorite movie genre is action. I want to be transported. I want to lose track of time and space. Forget where I am and just enjoy myself. I want to be entertained. Isn't that what we all want regardless of the genre? So, here's my next question.
What makes a good movie?
I believe that all the elements (character, cast, music, costuming, location, director, producer and even choreography) are tied to together. To have a good movie, you have to have a good story with believeable characters. In order to have the best charcaters, casting is key. Think about some of your favorite movies. What if the lead role had been cast differently? Would the Jason Bourne movies been nearly as good without Matt Damon? I don't think so.
This week we watched Awakenings with Robin Williams and Robert DeNiro, directed by Penny Marshall. Based on a true story, this movie was well cast and the acting was exceptional. (Made in 1990, it was nominated for best picture and best leading actor in 1991.)
